The family car is more fun offroad!

4WDing is one of the most exciting things you can do in the family car, driving your vehicle through obscenely steep tracks, sloppy bog holes, and gnarly rock gardens. But what do you really need, to take your vehicle through some seriously tough terrain?

Despite what you hear from your mates, having a setup that gets cranking off road doesn’t involve thousands of dollars of unwieldy upgrades and gnarly customized plates, you can simply grab a few bits of inexpensive gear and take your bog stock 4WD into the  bush for the time of your life!

A 4WD accessory, you shouldn’t leave home without is a Portable 12v Air compressor, which gives you full control over your tyre pressures allowing you to gain maximum traction. Dropping air pressures allows your tyres to sag out and effectively lengthens the contact area of your tyre and decreases the downward pressure on the tracks making sure that your vehicle can maintain traction even when you think it would be Impossible.

Another must have accessory you need to get your family vehicle just a little bit further offroad, is a Kwiky Tyre Deflator, this tricky device fastens to your tyre inflation valve and captures the valve core internally, then with full control allows you to easily and quickly dump as much air as you need to out of your tyres, and with the integrated bourdon tube gauge you can check the pressure left in your tyres.

With your tyres set to the right pressures, the next bit of kit you can add to your 4WD is a powerful winch and a reliable recovery kit, these handy accessories give you the magic ability to get your 4WD free from dramas on the tracks, by setting up a winch recovery you can smoothly pull your 4WD out of mud, or even support it when you are on steep hill climbs.

A winch has a mountain of pulling power and can be DIY installed onto the front (or rear) of any modern bulbar, with some simple hand tools and a little mechanical knowledge. Winches offer a massive amount of pulling power and when you are coupled with a recovery kit practically nothing will hold your vehicle back a recovery kit offers additional pulling power with the snatch block pulley.

That is just a handful of affordable accessories in your arsenal, there isn’t too much you will encounter that will hold your 4WD back.

With the family in tow, its best to hit mild tracks at first to get your bearings on the abilities of your stock standard vehicle.

Tackling tracks is a blast and with a bit of practice you can see just how far you can get your off the lot standard equipment 4WD.
