IN-CAB WINCH CONTROLS

Here’s a seriously cool upgrade for any Domin8r x or Domin8r Xtreme winch owner – an easy DIY upgrade to in-cab winch controls that puts the control of your winch literally at your fingertips! And the best part is, it’s incredibly easy to do too, requiring only a few very basic electrical supplies, and an hour or two of your time. And with this setup you can even still use a normal winch controller plugged into your control box if you need to control your winch from outside your vehicle – talk about a sweet setup!

TOOLS REQUIRED	Socket and spanner sets, pliers, screwdrivers
MATERIALS REQUIRED	Masking tape, cable ties

PROJECT OVERVIEW

STEP 1

The first step is to lay out all your wiring and your accessories. You’ll need a rocker cover style switch, a momentary in/out switch and a length of four-core cable to run the cabling into your dash. As well, just a few typical electrical installation supplies – cable ties, heat shrink, and electrical tape.

STEP 2

Run the cabling from your winch control box into your vehicle. You’ll often find that the easiest way to do this is with the use of a wire coat hanger, taping the end of the cabling to the coat hanger and using it to feed your cabling through a grommet in your firewall into the vehicle cabin.

STEP 3

Decide where you’re going to mount the switches – it should be somewhere that’s easy to access and within arm’s reach when you’re in the driver’s seat. You may find that it’s easiest to remove the panel from the vehicle to drill the mounting holes neatly on the workbench, as opposed to trying to figure it out inside the vehicle.

STEP 4

Disconnect your winch isolator so there’s no power going to the winch, and you can start connecting the wiring to your control box. You’ll need to remove the outer cover off the control box, giving you access to the solenoid and the wiring connectors.

STEP 5

Connect your four-core wiring to the red, black, yellow and black wires on the control box, making sure that you terminal the wiring properly – typically with ring terminals to allow you to easily attach to the screws on the solenoid.

STEP 6

Now that the wiring is connected to the control box, we can focus on the wiring going to the switches in the vehicle. You’ll need to run a wire from the isolator switch to the winch in/out switch with a small off-cut of wiring and some spade connectors.

STEP 7

Almost there! All that needs to be done is now connect the remaining wires to the in/out switch, taking note that you connect them to the right terminals on the switch – follow along with Cahn in the video as he explains clearly how to do it!

STEP 8

Final job – just re-fit any interior panels you’ve removed, and give your new in-cab winch controls a test run! Make sure that the winch responds the correct way to the way the switch is operated – if it’s back to front, it’s a simple solution – just swap the corresponding two wires together!
