What do the ratings really mean?

When shopping for a new set of LED Driving lights, the best way to get your head about the outputs that are advertised on the packet is like a common garden hose nozzle.

Lumens = Brightness

Lumens describe the total output of light that is available when in optimum conditions e.g. Warmed up to operating temperature, with more than enough battery power to keep them running. When making the comparison Lumen output is best compared with how much water is coming through the hose, with higher lumen rating meaning the tap is turned on more and lower ratings meaning the flow is reduced.

Lumens only describe the light output and do not give us an accurate idea of the lights range or spread.

LUX = Luminous flux

Lux is a measurement that describes just how much light is being received at the listed distance (equal to one lumen per square Metre). Keeping with the hose nozzle analogy, LUX is the spray pattern for instance whether it is more like a jet nozzle or more like the shower nozzle of your hose.

WATTAGE

Whilst wattage used to be an incredibly useful tool back when lights were resistance based, it is an outdated method for getting a real idea about just how bright your new LED driving lights are, as the old ratings give you more of an idea about how much overall energy the lights use but not how much they will put out.

Wiring
