Swag or Roof Top Tent?

2019-11-03T11:00:23 | By

In our camping stores across the country we always get asked the question; “Do I get an Adventure Kings Swag, or do I grab an Adventure Kings Roof Top Tent?” we are going to break down some of the puzzles and riddles you might need to ask yourself to decide whether your camping setup requires a Swag or a Roof Top Tent!

There is plenty to consider when choosing between a swag or a rooftop tent, like length of your trip, how often you will head out camping, your budget, and how much space you might be requiring!

LENGTH OF TRIP

This is one of the most critical factors which will help you decide which option you should go for, with the range of Swags available from 4WD Supacentre boasting a massive and comfortable Big Daddy Deluxe Swag you may have everything you need for a one off trip, perfect for a week or two on the tracks, and whilst it should tick a lot of boxes, it will also offer you the ability to make great use of it later on for weekend escapes and as a spare bed for when the in laws come to stay!

The longer the trip the more comfort you will want to look for, this is where the roof top tent range comes into its own stride. Boasting thicker mattresses, lofty views and excellent ventilation, they have earned the reputation as being one of the go to systems for longer trips away!

SPEED OF SETUP

This point is relevant when travelling for extended periods of time, your campsite becomes your home and the simplicity of setup and comfort afforded by the setup makes all the difference between enjoying your trip and wanting to head home. When pulling up to camp swag setup can take just a couple of minutes, but when you’ve been burning bitumen or hardcore tracks all day long then having any obstructions slowing down your ability to pull up a comfy camp chair and cracking the seal on a refreshing beverage might put you off.

This is where the seconds to setup roof top tent range hold their own, with the Kwiky Roof Top Tent and the Grand Tourer Roof Top Tent taking literally seconds to set up, simply unlatch the fastening clips and the spring loaded struts open up the tent automatically all you need to do is open the ladder and you are ready to go!

REGULARITY

How often you head out camping will also determine what camping setup best suits your application, if you only head out once a year, then the permanently fitted roof top tent on your vehicle may not be suitable for every day driving, as the additional weight on the top of your vehicle will change the handling characteristics, as well as reducing the likelihood of fitting your vehicle inside underground carparks.

However if you are one who always heads out every weekend the Kings roof top tent range is for you, additionally, if you find yourself dreaming of an extended trip into the unknown then roof top tents are perfect for the job, resulting in the ideal campsite anywhere you pull up.

DESTINATION

The destination you plan on going will potentially play a factor in helping to decide which style of campsite setup you need to choose. Parts of Australia have predatory animals like Crocodiles, dingoes and wild dogs. Where a standard swag places you on the ground, many campers feel much more comfortable camping at the top of a ladder in a roof top tent, whilst being actually targeted by these predators is extremely unlikely, the piece of mind it offers is enough for some campers to make the call!

SPACE

As with many of our previous point, there are options for everyone, but one of the biggest factors is the amount of space you have at camp, not only to set up your camp but also inside your setup.

A Big Daddy Deluxe Double Swag requires an incredible 3.33m² of level and flat ground to be set up which is as large as a queen bed at home, whilst massive inside, this isnt always achievable, particularly in hilly country and locations where the ground is marshy and damp or even in sandy locations like Fraser Island and the Simpson desert.

Where a roof top tent simply mounts to the roof of your vehicle and only requires the space you park your vehicle on to be set up which is incredibly convenient, particularly if you are touring tracks less traveled!

BUDGET.

Budgeting constraints are one of the limiting factors for many campsite setups and this is generally where the cookie crumbles.

With a double swag being able to be picked up for under $250 which is ultra-affordable, and still extremely practical and with the range of roof top tents starting at just under $700 the choice for the ultra-budget conscious seems obvious. But when you consider the price of similar roof top tents on the market running for $2000 – $8000 even the top of the line Grand Tourer is perfect for those who might have been prepared  to pay these figures for the competitions most basic models.
