Adventure Kings Steel Roof Racks are some of the most cost effective and popular 4WD roof racks available on the market. This popularity is mostly due to the durable, hard wearing powder coated finish for all weather, all season durability all in a cost-effective package that other brands struggle to match!

Whilst there is many options for how you can install one of these racks to the roof of your vehicle, this is a quick and handy guide for deciding which rack best fits your vehicle, and how best to fit it for maximum reliability and strength for your next trip!

There are two main varieties of roof rack mounting system available within the range of Adventure Kings Roof Rack, they are the “Gutter mounted” and the other is “track mounted” which is a vehicle specific style of mount.

 Left: Gutter mount, Right:Track mount

Knowing which type of mount your vehicle requires will give you a much better idea of which rack to choose and the following list will give you better perspective on which one to choose.

GUTTER MOUNTED

For many decades, no matter which brand of vehicle you owned, a rain gutter was the stamped and pressed connection point between your vehicles roofline and the pillars on the side of the vehicle. A rain gutter is just like a miniature version of the gutter on your house, and will run down both sides of your vehicle, and are the perfect mounting location for a set of roof racks.

Traditional rain gutter style fastenings clamp directly to the vehicle.

The gutter mounted styles of roof rack are generally stronger as they clamp directly to the structure of your vehicle and will have more mounting locations than the other alternative.

Vehicles fitted with rain gutters along with alternative types of fitments are able to fix any of the following to their vehicle depending on the application;

Steel Tradie Roof Racks

Roof Top Tent Racks

Full Length Steel Roof Racks

Steel Flat Rack

¾ Length Roof Rack

½ Length Roof Rack

Single Cab Roof Rack

TRACK MOUNTED

In recent years, manufacturing processes have changed and vehicles no longer consist of a body mounted to a chassis and are constructed in what is called monocoque, even if they are still made with a ladder chassis and cab, like traditional methods, the building process has changed dramatically.

Many modern vehicles don’t have rain gutters running down the side of the vehicle, and instead use what is called a track or channel mount which is usually 100% vehicle specific for fitment, and can be identified by the black rubber or plastic strip running parallel down the length of the roof line of your vehicle.

UNLISTED VEHICLES

If your vehicle isn’t listed in our list of purpose made track mounted rack systems and you don’t have rain gutters around the roof of your vehicle you still have options for getting one of these top quality roof racks mounted securely onto your vehicle.

Many modern vehicles come equipped from the factory with sports rails which are a set of bars that run from the front to rear of the vehicle, if not already equipped with cross bars, a set of aftermarket cross bars can easily be purchased to suit many of the leading brands of manufacturer.

If your vehicle is one of the dual cab varieties not listed, fitting a standard set of roof rack cross bars will give you an anchor point to mount one of these highly functional steel roof racks to your vehicle!

U-bolts fastening rack to conventional cross bars.

To begin mounting a rack to an unlisted vehicle, you basically can use any variety of rack you choose, by setting aside the standard mounting bracket kit and fastening the rack to your existing crossbars or sports racks using heavy duty rated u-bolts to secure it in place.

If choosing to mount your roof rack using U-bolts you must check your local regulations for what is required to comply with road safety rules, we have had great success with many vehicles that are not listed and not gutter mount compatible using U-bolts to secure the rack. The strongest way to fasten a rack using U-bolts is by fastening the u-bolt to one of the heavy duty steel rail components of the rack and avoiding only fastening to the mesh part of the rack, this ensures the rack will be secured as firmly as possible.
