Managing your trackside meals like a professional!

When thinking about the dream of living on the tracks and hitting gnarly low range sections, and long stretches of corrugations to reach remote and seemingly untouched campsites, we often forget the logistics of putting food on the table and how to get our favorite meals to last the distances without having a supply line in the middle of the bush – When we have to pack everything in, and out of our favorite campsites, we are left with little to no option but to choose canned food or freeze our meat and hope that when it thaws that if it is still fresh enough to eat and that the freezer burn hasn’t taken its toll.

With plenty of advancements in engineering and science we can now take advantage of highly efficient 12v portable refrigeration with systems like the Adventure Kings 70L Dual Zone Fridge/Freezer, you have the ability to defrost meals in the fridge section and store long term meals in a “Deep freeze” almost indefinitely – the two individually controlled sections are each adjustable between +10°C and -18°C and with thermostat controls are simple set and forget operation!

With keeping your food chilled now sorted, one extremely simple way to prepare your track-side meals is to precook and vacuum seal your meals before you even leave home in food grade satchels that prevent freezer burns and lock in the freshness with an Adventure Kings Vacuum Sealer.

By precooking large batches of your favorite meals with the tools and ingredients you have at home in the cupboard, you can portion them into meal sized portions, and then seal the portions in their own handy vacuum sealed bags.

With tasty homecooked meals pre-frozen they act like freezer bricks in your fridge freezer, enhancing the thermal efficiency and due to the waterproof, food grade bag the meal is sealed within, you can reheat your frozen meal trackside with minimal fuss and minimal cleanup by simply popping the sealed satchel inside a pot of boiling water for a few minutes, this kind of setup you can effectively store a couple of weeks worth of meals neatly in a much smaller space than by attempting to carry all of the condiments and raw ingredients for a couple of weeks worth of cooked meals!

Another method many campers use to take advantage of their Vacuum sealer is to suck all the excess air out from around your raw meat either from the butcher or the supermarket and sealing everything in portioned out neat packages giving you the ability to pre-freeze your snags, steaks, and even a chunk of meat to roast inside your Bedourie Camp Oven. Once sealed you can chuck it in your freezer at home, or even plug in your Adventure Kings Fridge Freezer using it’s 240v plug and get the internals chilled down to a cool temperature for a few days before your trip, this will mean your vehicles 12v system won’t be as strained dropping its temperature down to a nice and cold level to maintain your meals freshness for weeks.

When planning meals for long periods of time, keep in mind that no matter how much you love eating spaghetti Bolognese, after a whole week eating it you may be a bit off at the thought of munching on some tomato infused mince. So planning a handful of different meals that give you variety and choice means you can enjoy your meals without dreading dinner time!

Not all of your meals need to be frozen and by planning ahead means that no matter what happens through the day your meat has partially defrosted meaning meal prep when you’ve reached camp takes a lot less effort.

Taking the time to organise your meals will mean that when you get on the dirt, all the stressful stuff has been taken care of, it also means that when you start cooking, you don’t find out that one guy cannot eat onions, and you’ve planned spaggy bol for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
